Food at Holiday Villa Beach Resort and Spa

I was in Langkawi in August and stayed at the Holiday Villa Beach Resort and Spa. I was happy about the service at the hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food was something else.

The La Villa Restaurant offers barbecue buffet dinner three times a week. I can never say no to barbecues, so I decided to check it out. I started with salad (I don’t remember which sauce I took, but it was good). The vegetables were fresh and crisp.

Next, I had fried rice cooked with herbs, baked potatoes and prawn sambal. The fried rice was delicious. The baked potatoes were soft. The prawn sambal was neither hot nor spicy. So why call it sambal? I’m guessing the chef did so to cater to Western palates. In my humble opinion, as long as they’re here, why not let them have a taste of our hot and spicy food. Locals would definitely find the prawn sambal disappointing.


Next, the barbecue — satay, grilled lamb with herbs, grilled beef chicken teriyaki and grilled prawns. The meat were all tender and very delicious. The prawns were not fresh — disappoinnting — Langkawi is an island, after all.

I ended dinner with dessert, of course. Fruit tart, vanilla ice cream, cream brule and chocolate mousse. All of them were delicious. The creme brule was definitely one of the best I’ve had.

Breakfast the next day was at Lagenda Restaurant. The omelet was good. The roti jala and curry gravy was so so. The roti canai and dal gravy was delicious — a must try. I haven’t had mixed fruit with yogurt in a while — this was cool, creamy and refreshing.


I spent the rest of the day roaming the island. I got back to the hotel later in the afternoon and spent the rest of the day at the beach. Impressed with the previous day’s dinner, I decided to have dinner at Lagenda Restaurant.


The garlic bread with tomato and cheese was tasty even though the bread didn’t taste garlicky at all. The chicken and mushroom soup was delicious. The chicken shawarma sandwich was disappointing. I didn’t finish it.

After breakfast the next day, I went on a mangrove cruise. It was almost 3 pm when I arrived back at the hotel and I was famished. I headed for the Lagenda Restaurant and ordered chicken rice. It looked delicious but that was the worst chicken rice I’ve ever had. What was the chef thinking! Fortunately, the food didn’t go to waste because I was too hungry to be fussy. I shared some of the chicken with a cat that was lazing near my table.


I was too tired to get dressed for dinner that evening and decided to order a rack of lambs from room service. The lamb was so hard that I couldn’t cut it with the knife. I ended up picking it up and eating with my hands. The lamb tasted okay and the mint sauce was delicious, however, I didn’t think it was worth paying RM49.90 for it.

Like I said earlier, I was happy with the service at the hotel but there is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to food. Except for the barbecue dinner (worth paying RM75), unless you’re too tired or on the brink of starvation, it’s better to you explore the nearby restaurants — there are several.
