I am not a scholar on the topic of Islam. My opinion is not necessarily what Islam is. This is simply how I feel and what I believe. Even though I was born a Muslim, Islam was something I re-discovered. It has been an interesting journey.

Berapa Usia Aisha Ketika Mengahwini Nabi Muhammad s.a.w.?

Versi Bahasa Inggeris.

Berikut dipetik daripada “Islam: Silencing the Critics” oleh Zia U. Sheikh.

Mengapa Muhammad mengahwini perempuan muda?

At What Age Did Aisha Marry Prophet Muhammad?

Versi Bahasa Melayu.

The following is extracted from “Islam: Silencing the Critics” by Zia U. Sheikh.

Why would Muhammad marry a young girl?
This is another myth spread to give Muhammad a bad name. The reference is obviously to the Prophet Muhammad marrying Aisha, his youngest wife. The reality is as follows:

  1. She was the only one of the wives of the Prophet to be a virgin at marriage. The rest of his wives were widows and divorcees. If he was lusting after young women, he could have married the youngest women, and people would have readily given their daughters in marriage to him. But he didn’t.
  2. The first wife the prophet married was 40 years old and he was 25. Although one would usually marry someone yougner.
  3. He did not marry anyone while married to Khadija (the whole 25 years).
  4. The second time he got married, he was 50 and he married Sada who was around 80 years old.
  5. Aisha was young and bright and memorized every detail about what the prophet said and had done during their lifetime together and especially personal details about the prophet’s life style at home. This was one of the main reason he married a young person who could learn all this and teach it to everyone after hiss passing, and she did.
  6. As for the controversy surrounding her age, it is known that between the marriage contract and Aisha’s moving to the Prophet’s household, there was a 3-year gap during which she stayed with her parents.

The Status of Women in Islam

I saw a video on Facebook — a woman in a black jilbab (so you can only see her eyes) is showing flash cards to explain how women are inferior to men in Islam. I’m not going to post the video here because I don’t want to give it more views.

I don’t know why she feels a need to hide her face. She is not saying anything many Islamophobes are not already saying. It is yet another video quoting Quran verses out of context.

According to her, verse 2:228 says that a woman is inferior and of less value than a man. Verse 4:34 puts men in charge of women. Verse 2:282 says that a woman’s testimony is worth half of a man’s. Verse 4:11 allocate to a man twice as much inheritance as a woman

Let’s look at these Quran verses in its proper context.

Translation:
Divorced women remain in waiting for three periods, and it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs if they believe in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands have more right to take them back in this [period] if they want reconciliation. And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority]. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

This verse is about what a woman should do after a divorce. She is to wait for 3 menstrual cycles to be certain that she is not pregnant with a child of her ex-husband. After this waiting period is over and she is not pregnant, she is free to marry another man, if she wishes to do so.

Perlis Bike Run

Zakat is a type of tax Muslims pay on their income and assets (e.g., gold, silver, livestock, crops) at a rate of 2.5% per annum. Zakat money is distributed to the poor and those in need. Asnaf is the term used to refer to people who are eligible to receive zakat.

Perlis is a state in the north of Peninsular Malaysia. The Bike Run is a project by MAIPS to proactively seek asnaf to distribute zakat to them.

Please watch this documentary. The Bike Run is one of the most heartwarming and beautiful things I’ve ever seen. It’s humanity and humility at its best.

Suami Tanggung Dosa Isteri?

Apa kata Qur’an?

What are the Benefits of Fasting?

Today is the seventh day of Ramadan and Muslims worldwide are fasting. We abstain from food and water and a few other things from sunrise to sunset. Why do we deprive ourselves? Simply because we believe that our Creator know what is best for us, and therefore, we obey his command to fast in Ramadan. Turns out, several scientific researches show that there are many health benefits to fasting.

Below is a TEDx talk by Dr. Mark Mattson about how fasting benefits our brain. Dr. Mattson is the Chief of the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging and a professor of Neuroscience at The Johns Hopkins University. He is one of the foremost researchers in the area of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
